The community of Parma, Idaho has a little over 2,000 people. The community is very involved, as well as the parents, even if they don't truly have the extra income to help not only their child, but other students in the community. The families do their best to be a part of the school community.
We have about 75 fourth graders in our school.
When it comes to lunch, we have over 50% of the students on the free or reduced rate lunch program. There are many students who have attention needs, as well as students who are on IEPs, or require medication to focus or have suffered attention difficulties. Standard classroom chairs do not help, but sometimes hinder a student's ability to focus. A typical school day requires students to do writer's workshop (50-60 minutes), EnVisions math (about 45-60 minutes), additional math practice (about 30-40 minutes) and language arts (at least 60 minutes) every day. All teachers continue to maintain high expectations for all students in our classrooms. Teachers will be sure to go over teach-to's and rules about how to use a ball properly. If a student cannot use/sit on the ball correctly, they will lose the privilege in the future.
My Project
I have chosen a variety of brands and sizes of "stay balls" for this project because it will be the size recommended for this age and grade level. I have requested different sizes in order to hopefully allow each student (of a different size/height) the chance to use a stay-ball. It will fit under the student's table.
I hope my students will be able to use the stay-balls to their advantage to wiggle and release their extra energy.
I also hope it will benefit them in order to continue to be focused throughout the day during important times of instruction.
