As I observed the children in the community, I noticed that some of the children in the school gym expressed that they were bored or did not have much to do in the gym. Right then, I thought about having baking sessions for them, but did not quite figure out, how I would fund the sessions without asking the families for a monetary contribution. When I received wind of this donor project, I thought that it would be perfect for the students. One of the school improvement plans is improving school attendance. So instead of having the baking sessions AFTER school, I would like to present them during culinary class to help incentivize students to attend school.
The use of the kitchen aid mixer, will allow the students to properly mix baking ingredients.
By providing various cooking essentials for students to utilize, such as baking pan sets, decorating sets, dish detergent, baking powder, and aluminum foil will aid in making the culinary class a success. Another hope is to encourage the students to host occasional school/community wide baked goods give away, to showcase their culinary skills.
Although the grant is currently for my culinary class of students, this could be the gateway to a school-wide initiative (increase in student attendance and community involvement) that would be great. Not only can this get the students active and engaged in class, this can also give the students the opportunity to bake bread and contribute to the village and the Alaska community.
With proper funding for the materials, I feel that this would be great and most definitely get the students involved in school. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
