This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The baking club and class at our school includes students across the grade levels who bake for classes, teachers, and visitors. Some of their most successful baking endeavors have been pies for advisories on Thanksgiving and cookie decorating kits on Christmas.

Lauren and Carley are some of the founding members of the club who became engaged in baking after a semester long project during their freshmen year where they learned about baking all types of bread. They starting staying in during lunch to do some extra baking and eventually gathered a group of baking enthusiasts who have grown into a club that brings smiles to the whole school with their baked goods.

Baking is a fun activity that they participate in in addition to their regular classwork both as a lunchtime activity and as one of their elective classes. We have been using a borrowed oven for much of this year and last and we now have to return that oven and we want to make sure that they joy that this club brings to the school can continue.

If our project is fully funded, we can continue building our business beyond the small amount of baked goods we are able to produce in our tiny toaster our school is sharing with us. We will continue to grow in our entrepeneurship skills as we figure out ways to market our baked goods and in our finanacial literacy as we figure out how much to charge to make a lot of money to donate to children in need. We also will continue to learn deeply about teamwork, designing within constraints, and problem solving as we encounter multiple challenges in our baking each day already and will undoubtedly encounter more throughout the years of this business.

In Their Own Words

Our project idea is starting up and running a school bakery project. We are testing different recipes and making baked goods to sample and sell at school events. The project is important to us because we are learning about baking while also trying to build a business. We hope to eventually create enough revenue to give to community organizations, such as No Kid Hungry. This will solve problems related to hunger and food insecurity. We are also learning about running a small student led business to gain entrepreneurship skills for our future.

Our school gets a lot of visitors every day and we want to share with them even more student work in the form of baked goodies. As we bake things, we will share with visitors from around the country and become leaders in our school and, in the field of baking and cooking in high schools! Also we want our generation to feel the importance of baking and cooking for yourself and not just going out to eat all the time.

This project is important to us because we will be able to bake, share, and make more community in our school within the high-schoolers and the visitors from around the world that we host. We also hope to make more money so we can donate to organizations who give food to children in need.
