Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I am teaching AP Biology, Honors Biology, College Prep Biology and Environmental Science. This year I will be advising the Garden Club and Eco Mindfulness Club. My students really care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.
My AP Biology students need MiniOne's Bacteria Transformation lab, a PCR machine, and a variety of lab equipment for our biotechnology unit.
During our biotechnology unit students will learn micropipetting skills with MiniOne's Dilutions Lab. This will be important for when they transform bacteria in the class (Let it Glow Bacteria Transformation lab). To complete the labs they will need the PCR machine to purify their DNA. The students also need hot water baths at each table to do heat-shock treatments which is an important part of the transformation. I have also included oven mitts and test tube holders for lab safety. We also need glass test tubes and metal test tube racks that can be inside a hot bath. Right now we only have plastic test tubes and plastic racks. The students need scientific calculators to balance equations and calculate dilutions from stock solutions in the lab series. All of these materials will also be used for our unit on DNA and protein synthesis.
The requested lab books from Vernier will allow me to print the student worksheets from the labs. Sometimes an E-book is necessary and other times with calculation heavy labs, students prefer a hard copy with space provided to do their calculations. The students will be doing labs on cell energy, enzymes, and fermentation. I had a different project posted from Vernier for the sensors. The companion lab books will be a great addition for the students to explore new concepts in AP Biology.
