FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Kawasmi's classroom raised $244
This project is fully funded
I teach 8th grade science in a rural North Carolina public school. Microbiology is an important part of the 8th grade curriculum. Students need to learn about the various forms of bacteria, and about the presence of bacteria in their day-to-day life. A great activity for this is to have the students swab different surfaces they contact every day (such as desks, door knobs, computer keyboards, etc.) and culture the bacteria on nutrient agar plates. This helps students learn that bacteria is EVERYWHERE, that not all bacteria is bad, and gives them the opportunity to identify different types of bacteria. It is also a great way to introduce lab skills that will be necessary in high school biology.
I am asking for the nutrient agar media kit from Carolina Biological Supply which has the necessary petri dishes, nutrient agar, and sterile swabs to conduct this investigation into the world of microbes. I am also requesting prepared microscope slides of bacteria from Sargent Welch for use as reference. Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
