This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a unique urban school. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students Kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend a traditional school on a daily basis.
Many of my students have emotional and social issues, frequent medical treatments, safety concerns, difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless.
My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school. Some are grade levels behind, others are grade levels ahead
My Project
Many of my students are transient. Others live with several family members sharing a room. My students face difficulties every
day.
They rarely receive anything "new". Much of their clothing and shoes are hand me downs or have been donated. My students need something new, that they can call their own. But not something frivolous. They need something that makes them feel good about coming to school and learning. They need somewhere to keep their books and schoolwork. Many of my students keep their books in boxes and department store bags I have given them. They would be so excited to receive new backpacks, just for them. They could feel proud about coming to school with their new backpacks and happy to sit down and pull their work out of it. Help me inspire my students, to encourage and motivate them to be lifelong learners. It doesn't take much. Perhaps just a new backpack..., and knowing someone cares about them.
