My Students
We are so happy to be back in the library again this school year. Last year the library was used as a first grade classroom and home base for two virtual teachers. Now we are back to full operations and rebuilding the library program.
My students love their library and love reading.
They are in and out all day long, sometimes because they need a new read, and sometimes just to be there because it's their happy place.
So many of my students have said that they want to work in a library when they grow up, and that they feel happy and comfortable there. My favorite thing to hear from my students is "Ms. M., I had a hard day so I just had to come to the library." I love that it is their safe place!
My Project
Overview: Thank you for looking at my project. This year I am back with my students in the library and I want to build on their enthusiasm and make our learning hands-on. The toys that were selected are open ended and will be used in a variety of ways. Here are some examples: students will use the Lego and planks to create fences to keep Krackenhopper's carrots safe when we read the book "Creepy Carrots". They will use these tools to design and build an animal with adaptations to survive in the ecosystem they choose to study. They will design and build book characters for their writing, build turkey traps for a STEAM challenge, and much, much more.
Need: Students are starved for hands-on, collaborative learning.
They are so excited to be back together but also in need of connection and movement. These "loose parts" toys allow me to give the children creative challenges that connect to our reading and learning.
Impact: As the school librarian, I see every student in grades PK-4. These items will be used by all of our students for years to come.
