My Students

My students need basic manipulatives in the classroom! Help me transform my regular classroom into an extraordinary place for my students. We would like to engage our students with hands on learning tools and provide sensory integration as well as focus on IEP goals!

My classroom is a separate setting, exceptional children's classroom with eight students.

Students range in grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. The students in my classroom all have learning disabilities, ranging from mild to moderate delays and Autism. In addition, my students also have fine and gross motor delays and some have communication delays. These students come from various backgrounds but all are eager to learn! All of these exceptionalities are part of what makes my students so special and unique. Each one has their own way of thinking about the world. Our school has around 430 students. We are a high poverty, Title I school in a rural area.

My Project

Children pick up knowledge wherever it may be found, as long as it is meaningful to them and they can relate it to what they already know. Basic concepts and foundational skills are so important in early childhood and when students are beginning to grasp concepts. The alphabet phonics ABC interactive wall chart will help my students learn to blend letter sounds, recognize phonemes, learn phoneme sounds, and learn numbers 1-10.

Within the curriculum, literacy and numeracy are normally considered as foundational, essential or basic skills.

Having manipulatives so that students can explore and engage in activities on their own is one of the best ways to learn and can lead to increased retention, offer practice in problem solving/critical thinking, and often results in a physical creation. Math skills are just one part of a larger web of skills that children are developing in the early years; including language skills, physical skills, and social skills. Each of these skill areas is dependent on and influences the others. Subitizing picture math cards and a snap simple addition center will help my students understand number to quantity, 1:1 correspondence, basic addition using tangible objects. The light up timer and the posters will allow my students visuals to aid in their learning.
