My Students

I am an elementary school Reading Specialist working with 1st grade students. Our school is a Title I school with 62% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our students are from all walks of life, making our campus such a special and unique environment. We have over 40 different languages represented at our campus with students from Burma, Russia, Spain and Mexico. We have students who range from non-English speaking, to fluent English speaking. As our population of English Language Learners continues to grow, we continue to focus on building a strong community of diverse learners.

We strive to provide a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment in which our diverse learners will succeed.

My Project

This project is an extension to our first Back to the Basics Project. Before expecting students to reach their potential, we need to meet our students at their current levels. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a motivation theory focused on meeting our basic needs. If our basic needs are not met, we are not ready to move into academic needs.

Our students need basic life essentials.

Once students enter our school, we have the opportunity to meet their basic needs. Our project focuses on providing various clothing items (winter jackets, pants, shirts, etc.). We utilize a Clothes Closet on campus to assist students with items they may need. However, our inventory is running low. Through our project, we hope to restock our closet. Our ultimate goal is to ease our students' physical and emotional needs in order to focus their attention on achievement and personal growth.
