"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." It's my job to help get that fire started. In fifth grade it is imperative that they learn to be proficient writers. They are assessed in the Spring with a statewide writing exam.
I teach at a Title I school.
My students come from a poor rural setting. It is difficult for them to bring the necessary school supplies to school with them at the beginning of the year. This makes the day to day operation of "school" difficult at best.
My Project
Although I teach fifth grade, we move from our seats to the floor quite a bit. I can think of nothing worse than being required to sit in one spot all day without moving. In order to work on the floor the students need clipboards to write on and quality pencils to use. It is a disruption to learning if the children have to constantly stop working to get up and sharpen their pencils. The folders are needed to help the children stay organized and to keep their work in order.
Our fifth graders will leave this setting and move on to a much larger middle school setting in seventh grade.
Learning to organize and keep up with assignments could be the difference between future success and failure.
