"There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." - Frank Serafini
My students attend a suburban high school of about 2400 students and not unlike many teens, they are often reluctant readers.
Their struggles with reading make them even more inclined to profess, "I hate reading." When confronted with an entire library full of books, they are quickly overwhelmed and frequently struggle with finding materials of interest to them. As a result, students will often choose books according to size and cover art which doesn't always lead to having chosen a title of interest to them.
My Project
These books will provide my students with a variety of appropriately-leveled, high-interest materials through which to meet our independent reading goals. With these books, my students will learn how to select materials for their own reading enjoyment and will learn that books are an entertaining way to explore worlds similar to and different from their own. By increasing the number of high-interest books available for students in my classroom, I will be able to actively encourage a reading lifestyle for my students. Each time that I can grab a book from the shelf and offer a reluctant reader an entertaining choice, my students will benefit immeasurably.
The ultimate goal: Inspiring life-long readers.
These books will offer my students many opportunities to develop their skills as readers. Reading is a skill that students use across disciplines. With access to interesting, entertaining reading material, my students will cultivate their skills as critical readers.
