Back to School to Move and Play

My students need new percussion instruments and movement props for Music and Movement class. They need a Djembe, tambourines, woodblocks, scarves, bean bags and shakers.

My Students

These young musicians are ready to play and ready to MOVE! We make music with our voices and bodies and transfer rhythms to percussion instruments so the music always comes from within.

My students are so eager to learn, and they are especially excited to learn to make music with instruments they can hold in their own hands.

We have a small number of percussion items, but to make their musical listening vocabulary rich and diverse, we need a bigger variety of sounds. Our school is in New York City, and many of my students have families from other countries or heritages. They have heard many kinds of music just living in this urban environment, and we can imitate those sounds if we have more percussion to play. Additionally, my students love to move! They are developing a fluency of movement that is just beautiful to watch. We are asking for a few replacement movement props to aid in their physical rhythmic development.

My Project

We will learn to use our bodies in musical ways: scarves promote flowing movement, which will aid in maintaining a steady beat. Beanbags and egg shakers are fun ways to accommodate all shapes and sizes of hands, so regardless of age or ability, all students can participate in music-making. After learning to perform and create rhythms with our bodies and movement props, we can transfer that knowledge to instruments. We will chant rhythms, read rhythms, play along with recordings, create tone poems, accompany stories... Though the students might think this is just "play," they are learning so much!

As the music teacher for an all-girls public school, I consider it a large part of my job to instill confidence in my students.

I try to help them develop first awareness of how to move, play, and sing, and then a love of their individual physical and vocal qualities. Girls have unique needs that differ from those of boys, and I feel lucky that I am in an environment where I can address those needs directly. These instruments and movement props will facilitate what I strive for in my curriculum.
