My students attend a small, rural school in Mid-Missouri. It's a very tight-knit and proud community, but there is also a lot of poverty present. Our district has 75% of its students on the free and reduced lunch program. Many of them face day-to-day challenges of not knowing where they will sleep that night or where their next meal will come from. Despite struggles at home, my 3rd grade students are well-mannered, hard-working, and expressive. At this stage in their education they are becoming more curious, motivated, and are at the stage in their education where they are reading to learn.
My Project
Back-to-school is nearly upon us and this year I will be taking on the adventure of teaching 3rd grade. Because of the lack of cases of COVID in the town of Dixon where I am teaching, the district has chosen to go back to school in person, starting August 24. Our classroom will be self-contained and there are many restrictions and norms being set in place to hopefully maintain a healthy environment. Of course there are always difficulties in any location, but being in a small, rural school with an extremely limited budget presents extra challenges. Resources in the classroom that was left to me are few and far between.
This school year will be an adventure for many reasons and I would like to give my students a safe, inviting, and resource-rich learning environment for them to enjoy their own 3rd grade adventure, despite what is happening outside school walls.
The products that I have selected will help ensure my students have flexible options for their social-distance learning in the classroom and will diversify the kinds of instruction they receive. The supplies that I am requesting stock my classroom with teaching tools, as well as continue to support student learning.
