My Students

Imagine a teaching unit where students are fully engaged, analyzing, synthesizing, predicting, questioning, and collaborating with their peers. Enthusiasm for learning increases when students have accessible and flexible learning opportunities throughout the school day.

I teach in one of the largest school districts in the nation.

This neighborhood school is located in an urban area where gang violence is a common occurrence. Our student population is 1,106, and I provide instruction to one hundred and twenty of these students throughout the school day. My wide range of diverse learners consist of students with special needs, bilingual students with limited English speaking skills and students who require challenging instructional activities and resources to enhance their learning. My 8th grade classroom consists mainly of Latino students with rich Mexican roots and African American students. Currently, our poverty rate is 90.4% and many of my families qualify for free or reduced - priced meals at school. Gang activity and violence are common occurrences in this culturally and academically diverse learning community.

My Project

One of the goals of Common Core State Standards is to prepare students for career readiness and college. These rigorous standards deepen learning, critical thinking, writing and problem solving skills which are essential to college and career readiness success. A lack of high interest reading materials can cause students to become frustrated and indifferent towards learning and school. As a result of this novel, my students will gain a deeper appreciation for human lives, increase responsibility for their own actions while enhancing their language development skills through active reading and small group discussions.

My students are facing a new curriculum this school year and I need help acquiring reading materials that are included in my unit plan that will capture and sustain their learning.

These materials will support effective language development, address human values and promote tolerance of cultural differences among my students. Please consider my proposal.
