My Students
I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
I create most of the materials we use in my classroom. It takes quite a bit of cardstock, laminating sheets, laminators, and Velcro to make the activities. These activities last for a long time because they are durable so they can be sent home or kept in the classroom to continue working on basic skills year after year. The activities in this project will help create more activities that my students can use over and over to practice IEP goals as well as other skills we are learning in the classroom.
I create many opportunities throughout each week for students to follow visual directions to make a wide variety of projects.
In order to create these projects, we need lots of glue, scissors, and reliable staplers. The scissors and staplers we have in the classroom have lasted us for years now but they are in need of an upgrade to continue to allow the adults in the classroom to help prep materials for students. Having the supplies we need for student activities and projects will help my students be successful this school year in making progress towards their IEP goals.
