My Students

In the high-needs inner-city school where I teach, my debaters are being noticed on the state and national circuits. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems like they're not noticed in their own school, as the principal has no money to help with registration costs or basic supplies like paper and timers.

Our team has only been in existence for three years, but in that time the debaters have achieved some amazing feats.

This year, our captain took 1st speaker in the state, and came in top 8 at Harvard where over 200 debaters competed from around the country. Three debaters qualified for the State Championship, and one even won $5000 at a public speaking contest. What's truly amazing is that they have pulled this off with almost no support from our high-needs, financially-constrained public school. My principal doesn't even have the money to supply teachers with copy paper, much less support a program of this caliber.

My Project

In order to be on par with their peers who can afford more resources, my debaters need access to basic resources like legal pads on which to flow cases and handheld timers to use during rounds. The dry erase markers are needed for flowing practice rounds in the classroom.

Like many things, a lot of debate is really just a confidence game.

As one of the only all-minority teams in the league, my kids already have so many lines of difference to intimidate them. They're doing amazing things already, and I want them to keep up their confidence. Having access to these basic resources will help them keep up the good fight in the debate world.
