Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As you know, students need a variety of school supplies for school. Most of my students are not able to purchase these supplies and therefore have a difficult time completing ELA reading and writing tasks.

My sixth grade students attend a public school that is located in the poorest congressional district in New York.

Approximately 98% of of them receive free lunches. Most of them come to school without supplies and teachers have to supplement what these students need from out of pocket. My students are hard workers and come to school with a willingness to learn, despite their circumstances.

My Project

My students need notebooks, pencils, filler paper, dictionaries, and assorted erasers for the 2015-2016 school year. These resources are necessary due to the fact that most of my students start the school year without any school supplies. The composition notebooks will be used as reader's and writer's notebooks. The reader's notebook is an integral part of the reading workshop and is a great tool for authentic assessment. It goes hand-in-hand with read-aloud, with accountable talk and will really be powerful if students learn to talk deeply in preparation for writing. The main reason for a reader's notebook, in my opinion, is to deepen my students' ability to think, talk, and write about their reading. The writer's notebook will allow my students to take in the world around them and document their daily lives and provide students with an easy, informal way to start thinking about new topics and ideas. We need others supplies such as pencils, pens, and erasers, because many students do not have any at the beginning of the school year. Dictionaries will improve spelling, reading, and writing.

This project is important due to budget cuts and the fact that most of my students cannot afford these supplies, I need help to supplement what they need in order to be successful learners.

These supplies for my classroom will enhance the learning of all students. We appreciate the little things that we can get.
