My students need school supplies and other classroom materials to help them take full advantage of their learning experience and to be well prepared for all of their social and academic needs.

My Students
My students, my "kids", represent your typical inner city school-full of kids that want to learn, but need help getting the right tools and materials in place to help them all be successful. We know that ALL students want and can learn, but when obstacles get in the way students often feel discouraged and unsuccessful. Nearly all of my students come unprepared every day, and though it is out of their control, and I do my best to provide them with supplies, they 'feel' the pressure of not having adequate supplies.
I teach at a Title I school (100% free lunch) in the Sherman Park neighborhood where the riots and civil unrest took place in Milwaukee, WI in August 2016.
My kiddos were resilient, expressed levels of maturity and understanding ahead of their years when discussing and understanding social justice, and even helped plant trees in the area in restoration efforts. My kids face countless obstacles daily concerning racism, poverty, violence and more...school and classroom supplies shouldn't add to that list. The supplies they need will continue to help them be prepared and help them towards becoming successful!
My Project
We focus so much on college readiness that sometimes we lose sight of just day-to-day readiness! Nearly all of my students are in low-income/high poverty situations and school supplies and other necessary materials are difficult for their families to come by, and unfortunately, are not provided by the school either due to budgetary cuts.
I want my students to have a fighting chance towards being successful, and getting them the materials they need to perform their very important jobs as students, is crucial!
Pencils will give the students tools for writing in their notebooks from notes to reflection to exploring creative or out of the box thinking, and for practicing what they learn in school in the classroom and at home. Basic classroom supplies such as kleenex, sanitizer and disinfecting wipes will help to keep our students to practice good classroom hygiene and helping one another stay healthy. My students will greatly benefit having a pair of headphones to use to lessen the distraction from their activity and the activities of others, and a plug in computer mouse to make testing and other activities easier to navigate.
Lastly, we are working hard to integrate the arts into all of our core subjects because research has shown it is a most wonderful and effective strategy for helping students learn. Having even just basic art and project supplies (crayons, markers, paper, scissors, glue) and places to store materials and projects (storage carts and organization cubicles) , in addition to the every day needed supplies will help my students feel at ease and give them less to stress an worry about and therefore less energy and effort they're spending away from learning and growing their brilliant minds.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
