This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a social worker and the children I primarily work with are special education. Many children who are in special education classes, especially those with autism and ADHD, have a very challenging time working in close proximity to others. Learning online made these challenges much worse. One student, B, has a very hard time maintaining eye contact. My other student C becomes very anxious when he has to work closely with others.
I use play very frequently in my work with the students.
I attempt to motivate students to work on a common goal, allowing them to face and work through their challenges.
My Project
I am looking to change the physical environment of my classroom. The students have been online for so long (some over a year) that the students, especially my special education children, need to relearn how to work in person cooperatively.
By having round tables, students can work on a single project as a team in person.
Two to four students at a time can work on a single puzzle or science project, sharing in a joint effort, something they were not able to do working online. The proximity will allow the kids to relearn how to share space with other, something my special education students frequently have difficulty doing.
