My Students

As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.

Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 85% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.

Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.

My Project

When I was younger I always remember starting the school year by bringing in a pack of markers, a box of tissues, and other classroom basics that would last through the year. Now, as a teacher, I realize how important it was to have 30 students each bring in a box of tissues, or a pack of markers, because being able to provide students with these basic items is so important. Tissues, baby wipes, and hand sanitizer will help keep us clean and healthy, and create a sense of family in the classroom by offering these items. But the item have grossly underestimated is paper.

Paper is more valuable than gold in a school, possibly only second to disinfectant to prevent the spread of germs.

Paper is rationed in an effort to last the year, but it makes it challenging to make copies and provide students with the resources they need. Copy paper, will help provide students with the information they need to be successful, and the colored paper (and colored dry erase markers) will aid in organization and differentiation. Metallic Markers will allow us to label our instruments and electronics. Thank you for helping us get the resources needed to continue the school year!
