Back to Basics: Reading&Writing Supplies Amidst Big Budget Cuts
My students need supplies for Reading and Writing Workshop, including chart paper and large post-it notes to keep track of our learning throughout the units of study, paper organizers, and blank soft-cover books for our publishing.
My students are a diverse, lively bunch of 8 year olds on the north side of Chicago. Several of them are newcomers to the country, and are just beginning to understand, speak, read, and write English. All enter the classroom every morning eager to learn, energetic, and inquisitive.
The diversity of our classroom makes us stronger, and we are able to learn from each other's various cultures, languages, heritages, and abilities.
Our school receives Title I funding, and all students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Our school's teaching staff has been working without a contract for over a year, and that hardship, in addition to repeated cuts to our school's budget has begun to negatively affect my students' learning environment, making basic supplies like paper feel precious and sparse. Your donation will be the buffer between these drastic cuts and my students' learning.
My Project
Our learning stays with us when it is organized and easily accessible. My students need to see the evidence of their learning on chart paper on the classroom walls. We create these charts as a class, and students are asked to refer to them frequently as they forge ahead, developing their reading and writing grit.
Your generous donation will keep my students going strong on their path towards reading and writing independence.
Students need to have access to the paper materials that make writing possible. Paper organizers will solve our messy cabinet situation, and make the materials more appealing for students to take and use, thus bolstering their desire to write, write, write! Additionally, students' enthusiasm for writing increases exponentially when they know they will be able to publish their writing and send it out into the world in a way that looks and feels professional. The soft-cover books will give my students' writing process the dignity it deserves.
In my classroom, I try to foster a love of books, reading, writing, and learning in general. Amidst the massive budget cuts that have been plaguing our district, my school has not been able to purchase these necessary materials for my students, the effects of which can feel demoralizing to students inside the classroom. By providing my students access to these basic supplies, you can help shield my students from the dire funding deficit that undermine their learning and their lives. You can give them what they need to read fiercely and write powerfully.
