Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in the 3rd-4th grades with mild to moderate disabilities and an overwhelming eagerness to learn! Although they are below grade level in all academic areas, they all have the intellectual capacity to learn and retain information with a more structured and adult prompted environment. I currently have 11 students but expect to increase that number before the school year ends.

Although all my students learn in different modes, I have observed their strongest learning path.

Based on theses observations, I have four kinesthetic learners, six visual, and one which seems to be both of the above plus auditory. My kinesthetic learners work more efficiently during our hands-on activities, such as science projects, or during mathematics time using manipulatives. The more visual learners respond the best when I present color pictures, word walls with illustrations, or demonstrate how to complete a task before they are asked to work independently. One student is able to learn as rapidly as a general education student but has more emotional issues.

This year is more of a reunion year. I was the kinder-1st-grade teacher for most of them and now we meet again!

My Project

While the use of paper is highly discouraged in order to have a more "green" mentality, as a teacher it is also my job to make sure all students have the necessary tools needed learn all concepts across all academic areas.

Some students may need charts, multiplication tables, sight words, printed and sent home as well as a copy for school.

Also, most of my students do not have access to an electronic device or an adult that can walk them to the library after school. Most parents in our community work late hours and are unable to take students to a library. Due to socio-economic challenges, electronic devices for online assignments are also not an option.
