My Students
BASIC (behavioral academic & social intervention classroom) is the name of our Resource room in the high school. Here we focus on teaching students the skills they need in order to be successful in a typical general education classroom.
Students in need of support through BASIC are often students who struggle with developing relationships with both peers and teachers.
Many times these students display aggressive behaviors in the classroom once they become frustrated with academics. They are encouraged to seek out the guidance of a BASIC teacher in order to help deescalate their behavior and replace unwanted behaviors with appropriate skills.
Academic frustration, however, is not the only source of aggravation for many students who access BASIC. Oftentimes, students arrive to school with issues from home spilling over from the night or morning before. Unfortunately, these home life struggles affect their motivation in school.
While these students are provided with the support of the BASIC room and special education staff throughout their day, we are lacking tangible resources to to help with learning and practicing coping skills.
My Project
When a student enters the BASIC room in crisis and is in need of someone to help them deescalate, the binders will be a big help to the staff. Each student will create a binder to help communicate with the BASIC room staff what techniques will best help when in crisis. Students will choose from several of the requested items, such as; stress reflex balls to distract and reduce stress, tactile discs to pattern and distract, and mono fling nets for focus. By creating a binder, the student is able to communicate what can help them, when they are in crisis.
In addition, I have requested team building activities for us to use when the class is ready to learn about new coping strategies. It is important to be preventative; pre-teaching them techniques that could be used at the time of a crisis can help reduce the time they spend outside of the classroom
Because the students will have these resources to use when they are in need of a deescalation, perhaps they will be able to self soothe their way back into the classroom.
Perhaps we can continue the journey in education with a quick pause, not an entire lost day.
Our hope for BASIC is to provide these students with coping strategies they can use during class and throughout their day, so they may not need to leave class altogether.
