My Students

We are a Title I school and funding is very limited. As an English teacher, we've seen the lack of motivation and learning that has taken place this year, especailly in reading. Our reading scores have dropped significantly. Our school has adopted a Literacy Initiative which focuses on students 1) spending time simply reading 2) understanding what they read 3) being able to articulate the content of which they read. Because of Covid19 and many of our students not being face-to-face, this initiative was not met AT ALL. We are still being held accountable for students' reading levels improving and stepping out the box with innovative things for this to happen. We know that reading levels have dropped drastically and we need to build that back up.

My Project

As the highschool English grade-level chair, I have been charged with coming up with innovative ways for our students to make up 15 months of "lost" instruction in reading and writing. We have decided to pilot a Friday Book Club program which will start the FIRST week of school in August. The goal is to have a variety of high-interest books that will engage students and it will mimic our community's books clubs. Students will spend time in synchronous groups reading and discussing, and then create a presentation to share about what they read.

Asynchronously, students will create an engaging presentation via flipgrid other digital platform to discuss what was read and relate it to another text, themselves, or the world.

I've selected five copies of a strong variety of books so we can have groups of 4-5 students (as opposed to just getting one copy of a book for a class library, we want the kids to have an intellectual discusssion TOGETHER about what they read). This broad collection of books will allow teachers as a unit to share amongst all the classes.

The goal is for students to be given a choice of a book to read based on genre, relationships, experiences, and interests.
