My Students
I am a 4th and 5th Grade English Language Arts and Math teacher. Our school does looping so lucky for me I have the privilege to stay with the same students for two years in a row. When I said "Goodbye" to them in March, I knew it was not a good-bye but see you in 5th grade. I teach roughly 48-50 students each school year. My students come to school sharing many different cultural backgrounds and experiences.
My students come from a variety of economic levels.
Our school is an intermediate public school (only 4th and 5th grade). Therefore, we have a wide variety of students from the entire city. Our population is middle class working families with roughly 60% of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. We also have a large amount of students with ADHD and Special Education needs. Most of these students do not have books at their level at home that they can read. I would love to expand our class library into their home libraries during distance learning.
My Project
Our classroom/distance learning library is in need of new books. The books we have, have been loved and passed down from retired teachers. My students need new, engaging, and exciting books in our class library so they can develop a love for reading. My students gave me a LONG list of books and series they wanted in our class library before COVID-19. Lucky for them, they will have me again next school year so they can enjoy the books they picked. I added to that list, new titles they have never heard of that I think they will love.
Most of the students do not have their own "library" at home.
Expanding our library will help students pick just right books that they can read independently at home and when they come back to school. I want a variety of books and series that I can drop off to student's homes that they can read during distance learning.
Students love when I get brand new books because they fight about who gets to read them first. I want to continue that excitement and thrill they have when new books arrive in the comfort of their own home.
