This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in an excellent Dual Language program, learning both Spanish and English, in a low-income area. About 80% of my students are English Language Learners. At Meet the Teacher night in August, students were so eager to learn in their new classes. Their faces were glimming with enthusiasm! Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey flooded our school and we lost everything! Many of our students' families lost their homes leaving them displaced. We have relocated and students are bused to another neighborhood for our school. At the second Meet the Teacher night, students returned with love, appreciation, and that same enthusiasm to learn, even though we were at an unfamiliar location.
At our relocation, my students do not have an organized classroom library to practice reading books on their individual reading level.
My students love reading books of their interest. My goal is to rebuild our classroom library for students to continue enjoying reading.
My Project
Our classroom is in dire need of an organized library of leveled books. After being relocated, my students do not have bookshelves or book bins for leveled readers.
Having an organized classroom library is essential for students, as this will aid in maximizing students' time to actually read the books they have selected, increasing stamina, and building fluency.
The bookshelf will provide storage for books. Book bins are used to categorize books by reading level and genres. Students will be able to spend less time searching for books of interest and more time reading and understanding them. Can you imagine going into a public library without bookshelves and card catalogs?
