Awesome Autism Atmosphere!

My students need a classroom atmosphere that is comforting and promotes learning and the stimulation they require that is specific to children with autism. They need a little trampoline, a hammock, a tee pee playhouse and more.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

People with autism are awesome and deserve and awesome autism atmosphere in their classroom. The students that learn in my classroom do so by many methods and I need to increase their resources so that they are able to reach their full potential.

I am lucky enough to have multiple children on the autism spectrum in my classroom.

I teach Kindergarten through 3rd grade in a resource/semi-self contained room depending on what the students need. I have some key resources (Boardmaker and Velcro) but I had to purchase these with my own money because our school district is very low on funding and the belt is tightening. We are a public school and our community is just beginning to understand that students with autism have different learning styles and they need specific resources to help generalize and maintain skills. I learned about autism at a very young age when my parents decided to become respite providers for families with children with autism. I essentially "grew up" with children with autism as friends and weekend siblings. I now am able to teach children with autism in the classroom setting and I need the resources to help them. My Project

I chose a variety of items to help with the sensory issues that come along with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). I chose two types of swings that a student could use to release energy and gain vestibular stimulation. I also picked a trampoline with a safety handle to help with extra energy and to regain focus. I chose a modern "T" stool that appears to be a little more stable than the traditional "T" stool so that table activities are more enjoyable. I found a "Tee Pee" tent to hide in when the classroom is just a little too overwhelming and some floor chairs that rock for story time and classroom work with a lap desk. I feel these items will supplement the classroom in a very important manner and help all of the children in my class. I feel that these items are essential and will make a huge impact on their learning.

My students need these items very much.

My principal was able to purchase weighted vests but that was all she could afford this year. My students cannot wait. They need early intervention and you are my hope for their needs. I would gladly purchase these items myself, but they are just too expensive for me right now. I have a passion for children with autism and I want to help them as much as I can and educate the other teachers in my district. Thank you in advance for helping us succeed!
