My students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds in a small neighborhood school. They are in a high-risk, Title I school. They receive free breakfast and lunch, and we have many who participate in the Backpack Buddies Program.
Every day, these students walk into the classroom eager to learn.
They live in the digital age and embrace each new form of technology. We endure budget cuts every year, leaving the students to go without many resources that aid their success.
My Project
My students are asked daily to illustrate. Art improves a student's memory and concentration skills, develop decision-making and critical thinking skills. It also enhances communication and listening skills. Art can also help a student to improve self-esteem and social skills. When a student is working on a project or illustration, it gives them a chance to add the details to paper that they may not be able to verbally communicate. For this reason, it's highly important for them to have the necessary tools to use. Many of the parents do not have the resources to buy the materials do I try to make sure it's available in my classroom.
