My Students

Kindergarten students have a heavy responsibility! In addition to the rigorous state content standards, they have many social, emotional, linguistic and sensory skills to master.

Kindergartners must develop the language necessary to communicate their ideas and questions, but also to collaborate, cooperate and negotiate with their peers.

Over half of my students are English Language Learners who are working to master both conversational exchanges and basic vocabulary. My students also must develop an ethic of caring and empathy for their classroom peers. Few of my students go to preschool, so the classroom environment- and being with twenty other learners- is a new experience with many challenges. About half of my students live in our city's largest public housing development. It is notoriously unsafe. There are few parks and many busy streets in our neighborhood; there are few opportunities for outdoor, hands-on play and the sensory development it provides. So my students also need support in building vestibular and motor skills.

My Project

I expect all of my students to master the state standards by the end of the year. I also want them to develop into lifelong learners: inquisitive, confident thinkers who ably work with others and demonstrate self-respect. Through thematic learning units, my students have the opportunity to explore language, math and the sciences through multiple modalities. By aligning art projects to our units of study, I can provide integrated learning experiences that also build vocabulary and sensory-motor skills. These projects also require that students plan and execute their projects together, sharing resources and critiquing each others' work. Unfortunately, our school budget has been halved over the last year. We struggle to provide paper and pencils, let alone arts and crafts material. Without these resources, my students receive far less than they need and deserve, and their learning is more rote and less compelling. I am asking for a variety of materials that enable deep learning.

By providing these materials, you will have enabled my students to master academic standards while also developing into skilled citizens.

These materials are exciting, tactile and provide a wealth of opportunity for inquiry and crafts. Your support will provide my students the opportunity to question with confidence, negotiate with ease, and see themselves as lifelong learners.
