My Students

Our charter school is a science and math academy. We have a strong focus on being green as well as working with technology towards our goals. As the art teacher, I encourage creativity through art, while assisting classroom teachers with science standards.

I have students from kindergarten all the way up to sixth grade.

We are a relatively small school, having less than a thousand students. We are a school of choice, which means parents only bring their students here because they have chosen us over other schools.

My Project

The clay will be integrated into several grade level projects. Clay has not been a material that we have had the opportunity to work with in the past. Collaborating with grade level teachers will allow this project to be developed both in the traditional classroom through writing, as well as in our weekly art class where we will plan, design, and sculpt the projects. Because each grade level studies animals within the state standards of science I will use animals as a theme. Students will create pinch pots, animal sculptures, and free form designs to produce their own personal work of art. Students will also begin to learn how to experience and participate in art critique, focusing on the positive results learned from working with clay.

In the past, our art program has been through a lot- before we moved into the new building, we had a year without an art room!

I had to travel from classroom to classroom. I would like to open up a whole new level of art to our school by introducing a clay project.
