Awareness Art

My Students

My students are K-8 grade alternative school students.

They possess an amazing mix of resiliency and creativity. They attend alternative school for a variety of reasons, mostly having to do with behavior or anxiety struggles. Most students share a desire to return to traditional school and we work with them in a variety of areas to help them achieve their goal. One area of focus is in helping students develop respect and understanding for self and others. Art lends itself perfectly for this area of focus.

My Project

This year, my art classes will be embarking on a variety of projects designed to create respect for self and others. We need scratch boards in order to draw pictures on top of board (symbolizing what others see) and then "scratch off" that layer thereby creating an entirely view (what is underneath that that wish others saw). It is a powerful experience in showing students that what we see is almost never the whole picture- in art or in life! We also need mod podge and presentation boards for collage work, to create individual collages (and discuss) and then tie them together to show the beauty of all pieces together- the beauty and power of all of our stories. We need various other supplies such as t-squares, pastels, and specialty paper for other projects in this series including self-portraits, masks and mandalas.

Students will emerge from these art experiences, as the quote above says, with a variety of views.

When our worldview expands, our tolerance and respect expand as well. In this way, you are helping our students learn respect for self and others. This new understanding will be key to students having success in larger school settings and in all other areas in their lives as well.
