This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are primarily Hispanic and African American and come from a community called Little Village in Chicago. We are a pre-K to Grade 3 school. Our student population is around 500-550 students in total. Our school works hard to provide students with the best learning environment, teachers and academics.
To be honest, the best part of my job is my students!
They are children who amaze me with their qualities of kindness, dedication, and compassion. They always remind what that the important thing in life is: love.
My Project
Imagine going to your school library, and the shelves are bare or they are filled with old and outdated books. This is what my students experience when they come to the library. Although there is a local public library, many of our students are not able to visit. By having a well-stocked school library, students can have direct access to books they desire to read. I truly believe that it is important to introduce children to chapter books at a young age because it can nurture them to become avid readers. Not only that, it will also foster a sense of adventure and imagination in them! Don't we all remember how much we loved our favorite childhood chapter books and how they made us giggle or cry.
By donating to our project, you will help fill our library shelves with exiting chapter books, such as classics like:"Ralph and the Motorcycle", by Beverly Cleary, or new and popular graphic novels such as: "Ghosts" by Raina Telgemeier".
My students visit the library every week to checkout books for their reading pleasure. They often request a variety of chapter books that I do not have available. And it breaks my heart because when I hear them sigh, "Oh, ok". Your gift will provide a great number of titles that students are requesting the most. By having more chapter books in the library, students will be able to find a book to match their reading level. This in turn, will help students practice and improve their reading fluency.
Due to the current fiscal crisis in my school district, I have not received any funding from my school to purchase new books for the library this year. Your donation will literally be a be a life-saver for my students!
