Aviation Adventures

Help me give my students 12 Mini Drones to help teach my class basic aviation concepts and skills in an engaging way.

My Project

In our 1st-grade STEM class, drones will be introduced as a fun and engaging way to learn basic aviation skills. Through drone activities, students will explore the fundamentals of flight, including understanding how forces like lift and thrust affect motion. By navigating drones around the classroom or through simple obstacle courses, students will experience first-hand how these forces work, giving them a hands-on understanding of the principles that allow things to fly.

Two key things students will learn are the basics of flight dynamics and control, and the importance of balance in fligh-they’ll observe how making small adjustments to the drone’s controls can alter its path, giving them insight into the importance of stability and navigation- As they work in pairs or small groups to pilot the drones, students will communicate and collaborate to achieve flight goals, such as completing designated paths or reaching target locations- After their sessions, they’ll present their findings, sharing what they observed and discussing how each group overcame challenges-This collaborative experience encourages critical thinking and teamwork, helping them build essential social and emotional skills.

To extend learning further, a printer is needed for students to create paper plane designs. This will allow them to test concepts of lift, weight, and wing shape, enhancing their understanding of aviation principles beyond the drones. By creating, adjusting, and testing their own paper planes, students can visualize how changes to design affect flight, reinforcing the lessons learned with drones. The two primary goals for students are to gain a foundational understanding of aviation through hands-on experiences and to develop the ability to communicate their learning to others. These skills will be invaluable as they continue their STEM journey, preparing them to take on more complex challenges in aviation and engineering.
