I am a teacher in my 14th year teaching in a low-income, high poverty area. The population is 99% African American. We are located in the Garfield Park area on the west side of Chicago. I teach Algebra, Geometry, Algebra-Trig and College Algebra and coach Track and Field. The population of our school is under 400 students, but they should have as many opportunities as everyone else.
My students are looking for the chance to leave Chicago for education to better their lives and their family.
I hope that all of my students that I have worked with throughout the years will succeed.
My Project
During the last 14 years at MHS I have my track athletes go in the weight room to maintain and improve their strength. Our supply of dumbbells has always been low. For some reason, we only have 50 and 70 pound dumbbells currently in the weight room.
Strength training is beneficial for track and field athletes.
The goal this year for my athletes is to go down to state. My athletes could really use a variety of dumbbells. This dumbbell set will help my athletes get closer to the goal. I am excited to see what they can do when they have all they need.
