Autobiographies In Action

My students need markers and colored pencils as well 2 copies of 3 book titles - "Letter to My Daughter" by Maya Angelou, "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch, and "Biographies" by Thomas Macaulay.

This project is fully funded

I teach Intensive Reading to the lowest 30% of our schools 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Learners and Exceptional Education students at our school in Florida. The "Autobiography in Action" project will allow my students to increase their reading skills, while demonstrating pride for their heritage. Using the requested published author's biographies in my lessons will help my student's to better understand the ingredients of a well written book. Text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world will be established. Lessons on author's purpose, point of view, tone, main idea, details, sequence, inference, complex plot elements, figurative language, compare/contrast and cause/effect will be more meaningful to the students. The writing process will also be developed with the creation of their own autobiographies. The student will be guided through pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and final publication. In addition to writing their own autobiographies the students will be illustrating each section. The markers and colored pencils requested will ensure the students creativity. The illustrations will help teach my students visualization which is a major skill of a good reader. The "Autobiography in Action" project will provide an exciting hands on learning activity in which to teach the state reading standards while also instilling an appreciation of authors and recognition of the awesome power of reading! Your generous donation to this project will help make it possible for the students to bring their Autobiographies to proper final publication. This project will also solidify the family, student, and school connection.
