Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am currently a learning support teacher at a public school in Philadelphia, PA. However, next year I will be teaching an autism support class that will be opening at my school. Each student in this class will have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and will have an Individualized Education Program to help guide their instruction through differentiation, modifications, and accommodations in the classroom. The needs of my students will vary in many ways.
In order for my classroom to be successful there will be a number of materials to help engage my students, assist with their daily individualized routine and to met their academic and behavioral needs.
Setting up a new classroom can be expensive and the unique needs of these students creates an increase in materials and supplies needed. As a public school teacher, provided resources are limited and any help would be beneficial.
My Project
In the 2017-2018 school year I will be teaching in a newly opened autistic support classroom. Classroom's such as this one require a great deal of structure and organization. This occurs through carefully planned schedules, routine and classroom order. Opening a new classroom is expensive and the unique needs of these students requires a need for a variety of materials. As an educators in an inner city district, teachers are required to provide a great deal of material in order to have a successful classroom.
I need your help in ensuring that I can provide my students with ASD the highest quality of education possible.
Items like Velcro will help create an effective and interactive schedule that will allow the students to engage in their daily routine. To ensure that we stick to this routine, a timer will assist as an audible aid. A large pillows will be especially helpful in those difficult moments when students just need a few minutes to decompress, this will aid in providing a comforting, cool down area. Posters, number lines and calendars will help each student work towards accomplishing their IEP goals!
