Autistic Support Classroom In Need of Sensory and Center Materials!
My students need independent learning materials and sensory materials to help them calm down in order to be ready to learn. These items are needed to create the best learning environment appropriate for them.
I am new to my classroom where I teach Autistic Support. I would like to replenish my classroom with everything my students, who have special needs, need to be successful. I am asking for donations to purchase sensory items, a comfortable bean bag chair for my calm down corner and other supplies to teach students to work independently in centers.
While funding is not always available (PA State Budget stalemate that went on for over 9 months) or equitably shared across the state, or even across the same district, it is important for teachers to go above and beyond to ensure students have everything they need to succeed and grow.
Please help me in reaching this very attainable goal.
I have added items that will assist my students who have communication and social deficits, and sensory overload. The addition of the calm down corner will allow my students to have a response strategy for meltdowns and an outlet in the event that they need to regroup or calm down.
My Project
My students require one-on-one instruction. In order to provide each student with an effective lesson, I need to provide other students with work that they can do independently, that is based on their individualized learning goals.
The Educational Insight Hot Dot materials are fun to use, can be used independently, and help students check their work as they move from center to center.
My students are beginning to learn to work without the assistance of a one-on-one aid to guide them through work. Using the Hot Dot materials will allow them to work towards mastery on specific goals that are identified in the different Hot Dot cards/kits. They are only accustomed to using velcro matching sets for independent work which has become repetitive, boring, and no longer engaging. I am a new teacher to this classroom and am hoping that the changes I am making by purchasing these necessary and badly needed materials will help create a positive learning environment for all students.
The sensory bins will allow my students to explore the world around them in a way that is safe, fun, and will create the environment in which they need to learn. With multiple choices, students can select the best bin for them that meets their unique sensory needs. The bean bag chair will be used in the calm down area. The students have never had a reading area or calm down area where they could remove themselves from a frustrating situation to collect themselves. I have created visuals for this corner so that students know they can throw themselves into pillows or into the bean bag chair to begin the calm down process.
The sensory bins are used as rewards for completing work or attempting to complete work without a tantrum or meltdown or other class disruption.
