My Students
Can you imagine hearing you will be getting a severely autistic child in your classroom? The basic premise of the American educational system is that all children receive a free and appropriate education. For some, such as the autistic population, sometimes it is more difficult to ensure.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, and the families are involved with the education of their students.
Although we are technically in an urban area, we are on the fringe. In fact, a few blocks from the school you will find pastures and cows! The students come to school wanting to learn. The families struggle more and more each year due to the economy, but are very hard working individuals. Our free and reduced numbers have risen each year. Our school has high expectations for our students, and therefore the students have high expectations of themselves. The staff work very closely together and truly use the philosophy that it takes a village to raise a child. The staff all take students under their wing when they have academic or personal struggles. We are now getting students that struggle with moderate to severe autism.
My Project
We have not had severe to moderate autistic students in our classrooms, and therefore do not have the appropriate materials. There are many uses for Velcro! We will be able to design many different sensory activities with it. The large Hop-Along ball can be useful in helping with movement and activity. The various balls, sensory, yarn balls, the peanut massage ball, and the easy to catch balls have unique ways of being able to engage young autistic students in appropriate ways. The puzzles and other toys will also be appropriate for the educational and developmental needs. Even the basics such as pencils and scissors need to be appropriate for their specific needs. We have consulted with those that have had students with this level of severity and tried to follow their suggestions.
Each child is special, unique, and deserving of love and education.
We want to ensure our special students have the materials they need to be successful. This project will help provide these materials.
