My Project
I'm a special education teacher working in a middle school Autism classroom. Unfortunately.... even though this is a brand-new program, our classroom budget for the year is pretty small and I can not afford to pay out-of-pocket for some of the things that my students need to be successful and feel supported. I've been asking the district since June for items to set up a sensory space to help kids self-regulate. What I've been provided with is an empty storage room with some tables and expensive medical equipment. So when the kids are dysregulated the space is not at ALL conducive to helping them self-regulate and feel safe.
These flexible seating, mats, a tent and other items will help me create a space that will meet my students' sensory needs.
They will be able to access it throughout the day and it will be particularly helpful for those who tend to need breaks to prevent escalating when they are presented with triggers. Our class teaches coping skills and the goal is to ultimately have kids be able to identify their emotions and react to them in productive ways. Having this space available will be a great resource for teaching coping skills to all of our kids with sensory needs on the spectrum.
