My students need cube chairs and carpet squares to help them sit appropriately on the carpet during reading time, morning meeting, and instruction.

My Students
I teach a special day class for kindergarten through second grade students with autism. My students are funny, clever and high-energy, but sitting down and learning does not come naturally to many of them. They learn academics and socially appropriate behavior through "getting it right" and respond well to visual cues and positive reinforcement. My class is learning the core curriculum along with social skills - my students are learning to read, write and do math just like their grade level peers, but with the curriculum presented at a slower pace and with some modifications to help them learn. My students get most excited about dancing, PE time, music time, and learning through technology.
Our class is comprised of 9 wonderful students - 1 transitional kindergarter, 5 kindergarteners, 2 first graders and 1 second grader - all boys!
We go to school in Los Angeles at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Many of my students come from bilingual households, or are non-verbal or low-verbal.
My Project
I am requesting 8 cube chairs, 6 sensory carpet squares, and 10 regular carpet squares. My youngest students in kindergarten and TK need cube chairs to successfully sit on the carpet, and my older students need carpet squares to show them a clear, physical boundary of their space on the carpet.
My students with autism have a difficult time with personal space and sitting correctly without physical boundaries.
Without these items, my students quickly become distracted when sitting on the carpet. They turn around to look at, talk to, and touch their classmates, and lie down or wander away during instruction. Tape boundaries on the rug were extra distracting - who knew pulling up tape was so fun! As a result, nearly all of our whole group instruction this year has taken place at their desks as they cannot focus on the carpet. This has made parts of the curriculum difficult to cover.
Cube chairs are the perfect solution for my youngest students who have the most difficulty focusing on the carpet. They are cute, colorful and sturdy and the physical boundary they provide helps students stay in their spot, sitting upright. They are lightweight and can be moved to different spots on the carpet or around the room depending on what the class is doing.
For my older students who need less support, a carpet square provides a physical boundary of where they are supposed to be sitting. It provides a reminder not to lie down and not to touch others. The carpet squares will also be awesome to take outside during fire drills, earthquake drills and assemblies to help us be comfortable and remember to stay seated.
