Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at my school come from high poverty areas where even leaving the building is dangerous, no matter what time of day. The school is not too far away, but it is at least a train ride away and provides some distance from their home lives.
These students risk their own safety and come to school instead of staying home, locked behind their doors, because they want better lives.
It is my mission to arm them with the skills they need to attain and lead those better lives.
My Project
The texts from these three authors are vital for the students to be able to see themselves in the literature they are reading. There are three texts, Small Doses, Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, and The Last Black Unicorn, and the students will be able to choose the ones they's like to add to their daily reading. We will read these in class, discuss them with each other Socratic seminar style, use them to respond to our writing prompts, and ultimately learn about ourselves through seeing ourselves represented in literature.
Being able to see yourself in the literature you are reading is vital for a growing person.
