Author Visit With Kevin Emerson!

My students need the unique opportunity to meet author Kevin Emerson after reading his book "Last Day on Mars".

My Students

My elementary school serves 1st-3rd graders. A huge passion of mine has always been around classroom climate. My class of third graders arrive at school every day and are given a hug at the door and the greeting, "Welcome home"!

I train and expect my students to be independent, hard-working and cooperative learners focused on setting and reaching their own individual goals.

I offer a variety of seating options including: ergonomic stools, exercise balls, traditional chairs and cushioned benches to sit on every day.

In my classroom I opt to not use overhead fluorescent lighting. Instead I have provided over 30 lamps throughout the classroom to foster a more relaxing environment for learning.

We listen to classical music during our independent work times in the background.

Consistency is key. My students know they are safe, loved and valued. We are family.

My Project

Read aloud time provides one of the best ways to expose my 3rd grade students to new authors and genres of books. It easily is my favorite time of day and many of theirs as well. You often can hear a pin drop when you enter our classroom during read aloud!

The opportunity to invite an author of a read aloud book to speak to our classroom is unique, motivating and inspirational on entirely new levels!

My class will be reading Kevin Emerson's book "Last Day on Mars". This book is a futuristic science-fiction story about the final days of humanity's search for a new home after time on Earth and Mars has run out. Kevin Emerson is a local author and will be joining us on February 15, 2018! Coincidentally, this is the same week that the second book in his series will be released. The timing couldn't be more perfect!

Due to the past generosity of others on Donors Choose, I am able to provide a class set of this book, which means every child will have a book in hand as I am reading aloud to them. This alone improves student fluency and comprehension as they are able to track along with me.
