Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

100% of our students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. My students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American experience." However, they face many obstacles and unfamiliar stressors in adjusting to their new lives here: most are the primary translators for their families; many are child-care providers to younger siblings, and many must work almost full-time to support their families' economic needs. They are also dedicated to their education and see collaboration, team building, and communication as pillars for their success in the U.S.

When students return to our Health Education class in-person, I plan to welcome them back by exploring our emotional identities, and by sharing authentic, honest conversations about how we navigated 2020-21.

Amidst the COVID pandemic, unpredictable schooling, grief, social unrest, mental and physical stress, and isolation from friends and loved ones.

My Project

Reading the graphic novel SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson and SISSY, Jacob Tobia's memoir, in my classroom might be challenging for my students when they return to the classroom soon in person. As English Language Learners for diverse cultures, they demand lessons that are accessible and which enable a wide range of discussion and activities that relate to their real lives. They also consistently want space and guidance in navigating challenging topics such as identity, gender, safe relationships, sexual assault prevention, and decision making. I will be eager to use these two books as anchor texts - they are both critically acclaimed. In realistically portraying topics of sexual assault, survivorship, and struggles with gender identity, the authors create respectful and empowered characters who overcome intense struggles to be their authentic selves. Exploring these books will enable my diverse student body to explore their values about gender stereotypes, learn the impact of sexual harassment and assault, and practice the skills of consent and assertive communication to create healthier, more equitable lives.
