My Students
We spent the first week of school talking about how to have the BEST class for the BEST school year ever. We discussed words that would help us become the best. At the end of the week, my class chose the words; confident, kind and responsible to focus on.
I see my students choosing to be confident, kind and responsible every day.
We have two students who have special needs and I often see kids being kind by including them, helping them stay organized or encouraging them. We recently had an individual reward drawing and one student shared his reward with another student because he could see that the student was sad that he didn't win this time. My students confidently do their best knowing that if they fail they have the tools they need to learn and correct mistakes. My students exemplify responsibility by being good listeners, putting first things first and working hard.
My Project
I have noticed that students dread writing time. As soon as I ask students to pull out their writer's notebooks students start moaning and grumbling.
I would like to add excitement to writing by improving writing lessons, implementing author study and adding art materials and instruction to illustrations.
Teachers Pay Teachers offers many great resources for writing instruction and author or illustrator studies. Art supplies will allow me to increase the students options for creating illustrations to match their writing.
I believe that adding illustration options and more authentic types of writing student motivation will increase along with learning and skill retention.
