My students are science and technology explorers looking for interactive avenues to explore science.
My students attend a small school in a rural area.
Most of my students are sons and daughters of ranchers. They are hardworking, dedicated, and curious about the world around them. They love enhancing their learning with new materials and technologies. They are self-managers of their learning as they are 1:1 with HP Streams and do science in a blended-gamified learning environment.
My Project
In the nine years I've taught earth science, I've observed that teaching and learning about topography/elevation, watersheds, and groundwater are difficult without hands-on activities. While attending the 2015 National Science Teacher Association conference, I came across an Augmented Reality Sandbox. This sandbox isn't like your normal sandbox; it takes playing with sand to a new level with the combination of a Kinect, projector, and software. This virtual sandbox would allow my students to change the topography of the land right before their eyes, resulting in the formation of new watersheds and landscapes. It would help my visual learners understand how elevation affects all of the Earth systems through hands-on manipulation.
The donation of the Kinect, projector, and computer to run the software would help students visualize science concepts and apply them to real-world science events.
Including an Augmented Reality Sandbox in my classroom would help my students gain an understanding of the complexities of topography and the Earth systems they affect.
