My Students
My students are artists who think about the world and their learning in an abstract way. They come from diverse backgrounds and are all very proud to go to our school, which serves as their home away from home.
My classes are mixed levels, and every student has a particular talent that allows them to shine in and out of the classroom.
They all are committed to various art forms and look for ways to incorporate themes and ideas from our class into their work.
My Project
Auditioning for plays, commercials, and films outside of the bubble of high school can be intimidating, and my theatre students are on the brink of this reality (some are already there). I plan on bringing Janie Haddad Tompkins, a Los Angeles based actress and aspiring TV content creator who grew up in Charleston, SC, to South Carolina for a series of auditioning workshops with my students to teach them what they will encounter in the real world of auditioning and performance.
After working in theatre, television, film, and voiceover, Janie offers a unique training-based approach to acting and navigating the industry that has been heavily influenced by her practical participation in diverse media outlets.
Janie’s work includes improv and co-founding the nonprofit theatre company Meadow’s Basement that ran five full seasons of original works for five years in Hollywood. She acts in TV commercials, comedic television (BLACKISH, MODERN FAMILY, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, COMEDY BANG! BANG!), and she recently completed an eight season voiceover stint as the character of Margaret on the Emmy Award winning cartoon REGULAR SHOW on Cartoon Network. While theatre is where Janie started and trained, working in television is her passion. She continually works to be a larger figure in that arena as far as acting and generating her own stories. With her friend Aaron Ginsburg, Janie co-hosts the comedy conversation podcast JANIE & AARON DOES HOLLYWOOD. She can’t wait travel to her beloved hometown of Charleston to share her knowledge on how to audition with a confident, relaxed readiness and storytelling through the artists' unique voice and presence with the next generation of artists. She believes there is only one YOU and that YOU that you bring to the work is the most important component to the full expression of any story.
