Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach first grade in Chicago. I have 28 students enrolled in my classroom who mostly come from the surrounding low-income community.

All of my students are English language learners (ELLs), which means that they speak another language at home that is not English. My students are not only learning first grade content, but they are also learning a new language. So, as you can see they are hard workers! Their reading comprehension and fluency would improve in English if they were able to practice and listen to books and songs in English using the Califone wireless headphone system. Unfortunately, my school does not have the funds to purchase this system for my students.

The Califone wireless headphone system will help assist and improve my students' reading comprehension and fluency. Most importantly, it will help them learn English and gain new vocabulary! With this program the students will listen to many books on CD at our listening center in our classroom. They will also be able to listen to CDs throughout the school day with this listening center.

The Califone wireless headphone system will help my students listen to and read many books since that many do not have anyone at home to read to them. I was an ELL student myself and did not have anyone at home to read with me in English, but I did have many books on records that I would listen to for hours. I feel that the books with records that I listened to were partly responsible for my success in learning English and in fostering the love that I have for reading to this day! With your generosity, we can receive the Califone wireless headphone system for our classroom! Reading can unlock many doors for my students and give them opportunities for a bright future. Please help foster a love for reading for my first graders; it is the best gift they can receive!
