This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Although my students are in high school, most of them have the reading fluency of a fifth grader. Some have learning disabilities, but more are just the products of a dysfunctional school system. My students have goals that will remain unreachable unless they improve their reading skills.
My classes are full of bright, eager learners with special interests in health sciences.
They want to be nurses and doctors, psychiatrists and researchers. Our entire school population qualifies for free lunch, and all of the students identify as African American, Latino or South East Asian. These young people have struggled through a school system that has often given them unqualified teachers and insufficient resources.
My Project
There are three main strategies for improving reading fluency. One of these is reading along with an expert reader. With the audiobook version of nine books we are reading in class, plus a 6-person learning station, I will be able to have six of my most struggling readers getting exactly the modification they need to be successful in my class while improving their reading fluency. Students will build reading stamina, understand the content of the books, have a chance to focus on their work while going at their own pace, and have headphones to help remove the distractions. I hope that this, along with other interventions, will dramatically improve my students' reading fluency.
My young people deserve to have access to the resources that can help them close the educational gap that separates them from their more affluent peers who will also be applying to medical school.
The audiobooks and listening station are a first step to helping them build the skills they need to accomplish their dreams.
