My students need 6 CD Learning Centers, 4 pairs of headphones, a variety of audio books and 12 copies each of 2 books- "We Beat the Street: How a Friendship Pact Led to Success" and "Upstate".
My amazing 11th grade students come to the plate with a desire to learn and a positive attitude, despite the multiple challenges they face on a daily basis as students whose family income falls below the poverty line, and despite their low reading and writing abilities.
They face a daunting curriculum their junior year, filled with classic texts featuring mostly white men like Chaucer and Shakespeare. Yet they work through these books with gusto, struggling to grasp and connect with the enduring themes, but they often reach the frustration point and end up giving up before these texts make sense to them. This creates a damaging cycle, one in which the students begin to doubt their ability as readers, and begin to think they hate reading.
They beg me to let them read a "good" book, one in which they can see themselves. That's why I am trying to build up an audio listening center, so that the students can participate in literature circles. I am requesting the audio players, audio recordings, and accompanying books.
Your help will bring a great book, one that is recommended by the American Library Association, into the hands and ears of my students. A positive reading experience will help to give my students greater stamina to continue reading when confronted with a more challenging text.
