This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are majorly Latino cultural group, nestled in the small City of Santa Cruz, neighboring the beautiful coastal line. The students here at L. O. Elementary School are disadvantaged in many ways. Some of them live in extremely low-income housing, some of them are fostered, and some have even been homeless at a given point. Yet, even with these hardships, the students at L. O. Elementary School are some of the most respectful and resilient students that I've ever seen within my 9 years of teaching. What I love about each and every one of them is their passion to learn, as well as their passion to make a better life for themselves and for their families. They all have a story to tell, and you might wonder how they are still finding the strength within, to get up every morning and chase their dreams.
I've learned from the hope that sparkles in their eyes, that it is because our students are admirable, sharp, magnificent, caring, and they never give up.
They work as a true community force, and they look out for one another, including their teachers! I'm proud to call myself a L. O. Bear.
My Project
This audio center is something that has been needed for such a very long time. Our students, often coming in with limited English, will be able to access specific books on tape, as we all dive into our group and classroom texts. Many times, struggling readers will have alternative book options due to their literacy and phonic skills deficit. They need a high-level amount of both of these tools in order to access grade level materials. Many of them do not read on level, and often I will give them alternative book options, pair them with a partner to read, or re-read with them later in a small group. Time, of course, does not always allow me to do the last part I previously mentioned.
The Audio Reading Center will not only help them in building up reading confidence, but it will also allow them to independently access more on-level, critical reading material to be successful.
